Senior Pics at 18 months (not years) old

Mia turned 18 months old on Sunday.  We were all tired from all of the activities at the lake, so we just took it easy.  It was more fun to play with Mia in her room than do laundry.  She is such a sponge!  She absorbs everything that's going on and tries to imitate anything she sees us do.  For kicks, Wesley had her propping her chin on her fist like photographers have seniors do for the yearbook.  He would say, "Mia, show us your senior photo."  It was hilarious.

I took Mia to see the pediatrician for her 18 month check up today.  She did well, and Dr. Curry said everything looks great.  Only one shot, so she did fine.  She weighed 25 lbs and was 33  inches long.  She's perfect.

Family Fun at the Lake

In preparation for our trip to the lake, I tried Mia's life jacket on at home last week.  It surprised me that it didn't bother her at all.  In fact, she just went about her business without seeming to notice it much.  That was a relief because I wasn't sure if she would want to wear it.  I thought I would have to get her used to it so that she didn't meltdown at the lake, but it was no problem.

We met Carol Ann and Keith at Lake Texoma on Thursday.  We stayed at a really nice resort called Tanglewood.  They had a playground that we took Mia to several times.  She had a blast.  We went swimming in the pool the first evening we were there.  On the way to the pool, Mia was hurrying a little too fast and tripped which resulted in her first set of skinned knees.  She didn't really cry, but she wanted the dirt off of her hands immediately.  She doesn't care about any other part of her being dirty, but she wants her hands to be clean.  Mia thought it was great fun to blow bubbles in the water at the pool.  She also enjoyed the waterfall that ran into the pool, but she clung to me pretty close at first.  By the time we had been in the water for awhile, I was holding her out on her back while she kicked her feet.  As with most things, she wasn't exactly afraid at first, just hesitant.  When she sees that there is nothing to worry about, she usually loosens up.

Uncle Darvey joined us on Friday.  Carol Ann and I got massages at the spa.  In the afternoon, Wesley, Darvey, and Keith went to the driving range for awhile.  We all went down to the marina to check out the boats.  Mia was very interested and wanted to get down to walk around.  Um, nope, sorry kiddo.  Baby+deep water+no railing=disaster.  She really liked watching all of the ducks and geese swimming around.

We took a pontoon out on the lake on Saturday.  The weather was really nice for being out on the water.  It was Mia's first time on a boat as well as her first time swimming in a lake.  I had her slathered up with sunscreen plus her sunglasses and a hat on her head.  The first thing we did was put her life jacket on.  She wasn't quite sure what was going on.  She seemed a little dazed as we left the marina and headed for the middle of the lake.  We found a nice little cove for fishing, but I'm sure the fish didn't stick around long since we all jumped into the water one after another.  Mia wore her life jacket and also rode around in an inflatable pool toy.  She enjoyed herself.  We're already talking about going again next summer!

Just A-Swingin'

I am surprised sometimes when Mia mimics things we do. I forget that she is so observant. She will watch us do something a hundred times without showing any interest. Then, out of the blue she will try to do it. The other evening she was following Xander around the house trying to put his leash on just like she sees us do. I guess she figures if he goes outside she'll get to go, too!

Mia loves to color with crayons, markers, etc. I bought her some sidewalk chalk thinking that she would have a blast because she could just go to town on the sidewalk without me worrying about a mess. However, after a few scribbles, she was kind of bored with it. That's okay. I'll just hang on to them for now. I can whip those out at a later date.

The weather wasn't quite so stifling yesterday evening, so Wesley and I took Mia to Lake Cliff Park which is another park here in Oak Cliff. It is much larger than Kidd Springs and more level. I never let Mia take a ball to play with at Kidd Springs because I'm just sure it would end up in the duck pond. At Lake Cliff Park, she can roam around much more. Lake Cliff also just opened up new playground equipment in the last six months or so. They have different equipment for different age groups which is so nice. Mia played on the equipment for 2-5 yr olds. Once again, the slide was the bomb!

Weekend Fun

Uncle Darvey was here this weekend to visit. He and Wesley went to a Rangers game on Saturday. Mia enjoys playing with him and showing him her new tricks. She has started climbing the stairs up to the attic. For anyone who has seen those stairs, you know how steep they are and that they spiral around 90 degrees by the time they reach the top. She zips up them with no problem. On Sunday, Mia and I went to the park. She likes to run around and watch the ducks. I slathered sunscreen on her, put on her sunglasses, and plopped a hat on her head. As usual, the sunglasses lasted all of five seconds. I took us both some water because it was sweltering. Because it was just the two of us plus her stroller, I took her Eddie Bauer Harness Buddy. I affectionately call it the "baby leash". It looks like a pink dog. I am soooo glad that I bought it! It comes in handy when she wants to walk on a sidewalk that is near a lot of traffic or times like this when I need her to stay close. Mia doesn't mind wearing it at all. She ran around some, but then her cheeks started looking really pink. I keep her inside the house most of the time right now because she gets so hot. July in Texas is not the best time to spend all day in the heat. We were there about an hour and then headed back to the house. Hopefully, our park trips will be more frequent when the weather starts cooling off (in a couple of months).

The park is beautiful. A couple of views from the Japanese garden.
Mia's favorite thing on the playground was the slide. We had to do that about fifty times!

Go Team!

Even though it's mid July, football season seems right around the corner. Mia is representing her team. Just because she's a native born Texan doesn't mean we're not raising her right!

Little Firecracker

Fourth of July was pretty busy. We spent the morning at Papaw and Nana Bev's house. Mia liked riding around in the big Radio Flyer wagon. Nana Bev bought a couple of small chairs for her and Kennedy to use (and Connor and Zoey later on). Mia would sit in one then get up and sit in the other. This went on for awhile until she decided to try out the rocking horse. This rocking horse is pretty much as old as I am. Bev bought it for me when I was little. It's held up amazingly well throughout the years. Many of us kids used it. The ears are the only part of it that isn't wooden. Dad had to finally replace them recently, and they look as good as new. Mia was a little hesitant at first. She wasn't sure how to rock it plus her tippy toes just barely reached the runners on the sides. Once she figured it out though...look out! She was hurling herself back and forth with no fear.

After lunch, Mia and I went back to the hospital to see Rachel, Zoey, and Mimi. I had stopped to get Mom and Rach chocolate malts in Heavener so they were starting to melt by the time I made it to Poteau. Rach sat hers on the hospital table by her bed. Mia was trying to climb onto the sofa beside that table and stumbled. She bumped into the table which sent the malt flying to the floor. When it hit, the lid popped off, and the straw went through the bottom of the cup. Chocolate malt was EVERYWHERE. Did I happen to mention that Rach was in a never-yet-been-used room in the brand new labor and delivery wing of the hospital? Brand-spanking new and now christened by my toddler and a chocolate malt. I had to sop up malt that was all over the floor (because of course it had been full). I cleaned it off the sofa, the hospital bed, the table, and the walls. I thought I had removed all traces of it until more visitors started coming in. We had to finally call maintenance because everyone's shoes kept sticking to the floor. Oops. Mia was in her fourth of July dress, so I put Zoey in her red, white, and blues too. I wanted a pic of the girls in their festive outfits, but Mia didn't feel much like posing.

After we left the hospital, Mia and I met Papaw, Nana Bev, and Ryan for pizza (well, Mia ate food I brought for her). When we were finished, I stopped by Sonic and got Rach a replacement malt. We dropped it by the hospital on our way to Nanny and Papa's. We visited with Nanny and Papa for a while, and then it was time to head out for fireworks. My cousin, Stacy, and Wesley's cousin, Cody, live next to each other. There's plenty of space between their houses, so everyone set up there. When Mia and I arrived, it was getting close to dark. Cody brought his daughter, Cadence, over to see Mia. Mia is only three weeks older than Cadence. The girls inspected each other for a minute. Then, they started to walk off together. After only about five feet, they both started whining and reached out to us. At first, I thought they were each afraid that the other one was getting their parent's attention. When I picked Mia up, I saw that there were ants crawling on her ankles. At the same time, Cody said that something was biting him on the knee. The girls had found the only biting ants in the yard I guess. We scooped them up and went inside the house to make sure we got all of the ants off. I put some Benadryl cream on Mia's legs, and she immediately forgot about it. I took Mia's Mickey Mouse chair for her to sit in. She loves that chair and sits in it at home all of the time. However, we got no use out of it that night. Mia liked the lights but was terrified of the noise. She spent the entire time clinging to my shirt with her head buried in my chest. Whenever the noise would stop, she would peak up to see the lights only to dive down again when the noises continued. She never made a peep, though. So, I guess she halfway liked it. It was great family time!

FYI: Lots of pictures!

Our Very First Niece

Little Zoey Kay has arrived! Rachel delivered her via C-section on Friday morning. Poor Rach had endured several hours of pitocin only to discover that Zoey was breached. She was 8 lb. 15 oz. and 20 inches long. She has a cute little beauty mark on her right cheek. It's adorable. We all had fun changing her clothes. She wore a minimum of ten outfits per day while they were in the hospital (at least)! Mia loves babies, and Zoey was no exception. She wanted to point everything out on her: nose, ears, etc. As for me holding Zoey, well she didn't like it much. I'm not sure where the jealousy comes from. Thankfully, Mom distracted Mia so that I could get in some cuddle time with my niece. She's just the cutest little thing. Tons of people came to the hospital to see Zoey. Rach will hopefully get more rest now that she is at Mom's. She's staying with Mom for several days while she recovers from the surgery. I'm sure that Mimi (Mom) just loves having them there!

Road to Heavener

Mia has been so energetic lately. She has started walking wide-legged over toys in the floor. Her container with her pop links is almost too tall for it, but she giggles anyway. It makes me laugh when she walks that way with a wide stance over something little like her sippy cup in the floor.

She surprised me the other day by crossing her fingers. I would have thought she was too young to have that kind of coordination, but she's always amazing me with some new talent or another. She was crossing her fingers at people in the checkout line at the grocery store this evening. One lady did it back at her which she thought was great!

Mia and I went to Heavener this weekend for the 4th. Traffic getting out of Dallas was awful, and it was pouring down rain. I finally just stopped so we could eat dinner. We ate at Whataburger, and Mia loved her chicken strips and fries. She almost never eats fast food, but I had few options due to the torrential downpour outside. The rain, traffic, and an accident really slowed us down. It rained on us all the way from Dallas to Durant! We didn't get to Wilburton until after 11:00. By then, it was time for one last potty break at the Plaza. I thought I might as well change Mia's diaper while we were in there. I knew she had one more diaper in her bag. By this time of the evening, I'm exhausted. I take off Mia's diaper and reach for the last one in the bag. I start to put it on her only to discover that one side of it is missing the velcro strip that holds it in place. Sheesh! It made me laugh out loud in the bathroom. I just rigged it as best I could and then changed her again when I got back out to the car where the rest of the diapers were!
